This is a presentation plaque featuring a vial of polystyrene spheres, known as "The First Space Product". MADE IN SPACE!
The microscopic spheres (10 micrometers in diameter) were manufactured in space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger during the NASA STS-6 mission (April 4-9, 1983).
They were produced using technology developed by Lehigh University and NASA.
The beads are used for the calibration of particle size measuring instruments, such as optical and electron microscopes.
